Why weight control during menopause is important


Women who are going through menopause should pay special attention to their weight to avoid repiratory problems.
According to Professor Dieter Koehler of the German Association for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine, allergic and asthmatic complaints from women after menopause are almost double the level reported by women who are still menstruating.


Research conducted by Norwegian scientists found that these respiratory problems are linked to falling estrogen after monthly bleeding stops. According to the research, estrogen (oestrogen), the female sex hormone, apparently has a protective effect on the lungs.

Women who are especially thin or underweight are particularly affected by the problem. In those women, the estrogen level after menopause sinks to an especially low level because their bodies store so little fat. But - and here comes the twist - the study showed that overweight, obese women also show poor lung function.
(Remark: As with any other health problem related to overweight or underweight, it shows that a balanced body - balanced diet, balanced metabolism - works best. The trouble is, it seems hard to achieve for most of us).

The association resommends women to make every effort during their menopause to gain and maintain a healthy body weight. The ideal body mass index for menopausal women is 25. DPA
